Educated: St. Dunstan High School.

Early career: Teen disc jockey at CFCY TV in the mid 1960s; joined the Guardian newspaper in Charlottetown, moved to CFCF in Montreal as a lineup and assignment editor in 1969 and in 1971 joined CFRA radio in Ottawa as a political reporter.

Later career: Joined CBC Radio Parliament Hill bureau in 1974 and moved to The National in 1977. Covered most of the important federal stories of the Pierre Trudeau, Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney governments. Covered the fall of South Vietnam in April 1975 for the jerseys Moved to Baton Broadcasting in 1988 and joined CTV Newsnet, now the CTV News Channel, as a popular and nationally known broadcaster with a reputation for knowing the inside word on politics.

Awards: Won a 1986 ACTRA Award for his coverage of a 1985 attack on the Turkish embassy in Ottawa. Inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Politics: Named to the Senate by then prime minister Stephen Harper in December 2008; sworn in the following month. Became a much sought after fundraiser for the Conservative party.

Legal woes: On July 17, 2014, was charged by the RCMP with 31 counts of fraud, breach of trust and bribery in connection with his travel and housing expense claims. 62 day trial began on April 7, 2015, ended Feb. 23, 2016.
